MAZDA CX-5 vs Honda CR-V: Performance Specifications

2021 MAZDA CX-5 vs Honda CR-V PerformanceUnder the hood of the Mazda CX-5, drivers will see one of two powerful engines. The first is Mazda’s standard Skyactiv®-G 2.5 engine, which produces a compelling 186 lb-ft of torque.

What comes standard for drivers of the Honda CR-V? Unfortunately, something less exciting—a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which only nets 179 lb-ft of torque. While Honda does offer both standard front-wheel-drive (FWD) or optional Real Time all-wheel-drive™ (AWD), this 1.5-liter engine is all you’ll get in terms of gasoline powertrains.

Mazda, on the other hand, offers a Skyactiv®-G 2.5 Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine. This engine, which works with a Skyactiv®-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission, pumps out a whopping 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

For a bit of all-weather aid, drivers can equip the optional i-ACTIV AWD® system. This system provides secure and smooth handling for a boost of confidence in all conditions. Plus, all Mazda CX-5 AWD models include Off-road Traction Assist, which increases traction on uneven terrain.

Another bonus of the Mazda CX-5 is G-Vectoring Control Plus. This standard system helps minimize the amount of corrective steering needed while driving for better control and less fatigue. Since this system is exclusive to Mazda, you won’t find it in the CR-V.

MAZDA CX-5 vs Honda CR-V: Interior Space & Comfort

When it comes to the cabins of these two crossovers, you’ll notice both come with their share of premium amenities and comforts. Let’s look inside and see what they’ve got.

In terms of passenger space, both vehicles can hold up to five people. The Mazda CX-5, however, edges out the CR-V slightly, with 55.2 inches and 55.3 inches of front and rear hip room, respectively. The CR-V only provides 55.1 inches of front hip room and 49.5 inches of rear hip room.

Furthermore, while both cars feature available heated seating, Mazda takes it one step further with three levels of heat settings. Mazda also offers ventilated seating, something Honda does not.

Here’s another aspect Honda didn’t consider: The Mazda CX-5 was designed to create a space that’s easy to use, with all displays, gauges, and buttons positioned to limit distractions and keep you focused on the road ahead.

The CR-V also skips out on some premium details, like genuine wood trimming and top-of-the-line Caturra Brown Nappa leather, things all found in the higher trim levels of the Mazda CX-5.

We should mention, though, that they do share some features, like a leather-trimmed steering wheel. However, this feature is standard in the Mazda CX-5, while it is only an available option in the CR-V.

MAZDA CX-5 vs Honda CR-V: Advanced Technology Features

2021 MAZDA CX-5 vs Honda CR-V TechnologyIn today’s modern world, technology is all around us. Now, thanks to the innovative features of the 2021 Mazda CX-5, it’s also inside your vehicle.

At the center of it all is Mazda’s standard 10.25-inch full-color touchscreen display. Nope, that’s not a typo. How does the screen inside the CR-V look? Well, its standard size is only five inches and doesn’t include touch capabilities. Also, the highest upgrade option is only a 7-inch touch-screen display.

With the Mazda CX-5, you also get standard access to both Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration as part of the Mazda Connect™ infotainment system. Simply connect your compatible smartphone to send and receive text messages, listen to your favorite tunes, and much more. To experience these systems in the Honda CR-V, you’ll have to upgrade to a higher trim level.

Speaking of your favorite tunes, road trips have never sounded better than when paired with Mazda’s available 10-speaker Bose® surround sound system with Centerpoint® 2 and AudioPilot® 2. Honda does offer its own premium audio system; however, it only contains nine speakers.

MAZDA CX-5 vs Honda CR-V: Safety & Driver-Assistive Technology

When it comes to ensuring the safety of you and your passengers, nothing is more important. That’s why the teams behind the Mazda CX-5 and the Honda CR-V have implemented a series of safety and driver-assistive technologies into their vehicles.

For the Mazda CX-5, this is known as i-Activesense®, which includes the following standard features:

  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Lane Departure Warning with Lane-keep Assist

Taking a closer look at some of these features, we can see how much your Mazda CX-5 has your back. For instance, with Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, a set speed range is maintained to help keep a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. If the vehicle ahead reduces its speed or even comes to a stop, your car can adjust accordingly.

Honda does offer similar standard features as well; however, its Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Monitor is only offered in higher trim levels. Speaking of Mazda’s Blind Spot Monitoring, it’s an intuitive feature that monitors your blind spot zones. If another vehicle is detected, it will send a chime and display a warning light on the side mirror.
