Compact luxury SUVs, like the Mazda CX-5 and the BMW X1, are perfect for getting around Willow Grove, Willow Manor, and Glenside, PA. They’re stylish, ready for winter weather, and offer the kind of cargo room for your shopping sprees at Willow Grove Park Mall.

Which one is right for you, though? To help you decide, the team at Mazda of Abington has put them up against each other in this Mazda CX-5 vs. BMW X1 comparison.

Performance Specs

Whether you’re running errands or heading down to Philadelphia, the Mazda CX-5 offers an exciting drive with its available turbocharged Skyactiv®-G 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. With the X1, you just get its 2.0L 4-cylinder engine regardless of the configuration you choose.

Generating more power, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is ready to provide sporty performance and quick acceleration when needed. Both of these SUVs also offer an available all-wheel drive (AWD) system to provide even better stability when driving in the rain or snow.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 also does well at conserving fuel as you drive. At its best, it gets an EPA-estimated 25 city/31 highway MPG.* The BMW X1 does just as well while cruising along the highways, but when commuting around locally and in the city, it doesn’t quite match the fuel economy of the Mazda CX-5. At best, the 2021 BMW X1 gets 24 city MPG. Over time, that extra mileage will add up and you’ll be better able to make the most of each tank of gas with the Mazda CX-5.

Interior Dimensions

The Mazda CX-5 features a stylish cabin with seating for up to five people. It offers both available leather seats and leatherette upholstery with Lux Suede® inserts. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector come standard on every trim level.

You’ll find lots of ways to get comfortable, too, with available power-adjustable seats. The 2021 X1 also comes with many premium features and options to provide a comfortable and upscale cabin. Still, it’s hard to beat the style and sophistication of the available Caturra Brown Nappa leather and genuine layered wood trim in the Mazda CX-5. As far as space, you’ll find more of it inside the 2021 Mazda CX-5, too.

With a bigger cabin, the Mazda CX-5 also provides more cargo room. The trunk features 30.9 cubic feet of space. The BMW can’t carry quite as much since its trunk only has 27.1 cubic feet of cargo room.

Cabin Technology

Both SUVs come with a sleek touchscreen on top of the dashboard. You can sync your smartphone via Bluetooth® to stream music and safely make hands-free calls. This offers even more integrated connection to your smartphone so you can safely respond to texts and use various applications, like your phone’s navigation, while driving.

The primary difference is the center display you’ll get in each of these SUVs. The BMW X1 comes with an 8.8-inch touchscreen, while the 2021 Mazda CX-5 features a larger, 10.25-inch touchscreen. With it, you can easily view whichever settings or applications you want. Additionally, the Mazda CX-5 also comes standard with:

  • HD Radio
  • Pandora® internet radio integration
  • Infotainment system voice command

This provides even more options and easier control when it comes to your entertainment. The BMW X1 doesn’t offer all of these various options, so you’ll be more limited in the entertainment you and your passengers can choose as you drive.

Safety Ratings

Both of these models have been put to the test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the results are in. While the 2021 BMW X1 tested well in many categories, the overall design and safety systems of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 helped it receive the highest possible score from both the IIHS and the NHTSA. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has been recognized as:

  • IIHS 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+
  • NHTSA 5-Star Overall Safety Rating

The BMW X1 also received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA, but in some categories it didn’t test as well as the Mazda CX-5, which got five stars in almost every category. Also, the BMW X1 was not recognized by the IIHS. Let’s now see what helps make the 2021 Mazda CX-5 such a safe SUV to drive.

Safety Features

Their technology systems also help you stay safe by providing more awareness during your drive. The Mazda CX-5 comes with lots of standard driver-assisting features that can help prevent accidents, including:

  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning System with Lane-keep Assist
  • Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection
  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go

The BMW X1 offers several similar safety features, but it doesn’t come standard with as many on its base trim. Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is a particularly helpful feature that’s only standard in the Mazda CX-5.

2021 MAZDA CX-5 safety features

With it, you can confidently change lanes since you’ll know the moment there’s a car approaching in the other lane. You can also safely back out of parking spots, knowing the system will alert you the second it detects a car crossing into your path.

There are even a few other driver-assistive features the Mazda CX-5 offers on higher trim levels that aren’t found in the X1. These include available Driver Attention Alert. Whether you’re distracted or get tired during your next road trip, this system will notice and alert you so you can refocus on driving or know it’s time to take a break.

Helping provide even better visibility at night, the available Adaptive Front-Lighting System pivots the headlights the direction you’re turning so your path always stays illuminated as you drive your 2021 Mazda CX-5.
